Prince's pop life, song by song, in chronological order.

D / M / S / R Subscriber Dispatch #4: September 27, 2024

Hi, everyone! I had hoped to have my next post (“17 Days”!) finished by today, but decided to prioritize other projects (not least my mental health) instead. This means we won’t be seeing it until October, because tomorrow my wife and I are flying out for a two-week sabbatical trip/second honeymoon to Ireland and England, with a stopover in Iceland on the way back. The good news is, when I come back on October 13, I should be feeling refreshed–and I’ll have a whole additional week off work to finish that post. In the meantime, please check out “Possessed” if you haven’t already! It’s always been one of my favorite bootleg tracks, so it was important to me to get it right–and the subject matter made it a fun one for me as an avowed Spooky Boi.

Also on the self-promotion tip, I wanted to share that the videos from last month’s #Come30 online symposium are finally up on YouTube! After I’m back from the U.K., I’ll share a few of my favorites; I still need to catch up on some of the ones I missed the first time around. But for now, here’s mine:

While we’re here, I also wanted to acknowledge this week’s very sad news that Cat Glover has passed away. I’m not the right person to eulogize Cat–I never met her, and don’t have a particularly deep connection to her beyond having seen the Sign “O” the Times movie and Lovesexy Live home video while in possession of eyes and a heart. But it’s been touching to see all the memories shared and general outpouring of love on social media for one of the most undersung contributors to Prince’s late-’80s aesthetic.

Finally, I figured I’d share this playlist of some of the music I’ve been listening to this past month. I suspect it won’t be to many of my readers’ tastes–my musical leanings are seasonal, and for whatever reason in the fall I tend to gravitate toward sepia-tinged country rock and doom metal–but it’s a snapshot of where my head has been at these past few weeks. Spotify playlist is embedded below, and it’s also on Apple Music if you’re so inclined.

I’ll be back next month with “17 Days”–see you then!
